Improved Voltage Regulators

Case ID: 01125

Description

In the past decade, the landscape of energy production has had to shift to accommodate renewables which, unlike fossil fuels, are subject to frequent fluctuations; potentially destabilizing grid operators. With the continued demand for solar PV system installation, there is a pressing need for utilities to regulate the voltages at the low voltage distribution grids. Inventors at the University of Hawaii have developed novel methodology to enable an improved voltage regulator.

Advantages

- Quantifies the effect of injected power on voltage rise

- Lowers the voltage at peak PV times more effectively than conventional voltage regulators

- Increases the potential capacity of PV solar systems on distribution grids

- Helps increase the lifetime of voltage regulators by decreasing the value of LTC
