A series of new products isolated from a medicinal plant, Vernonia cinerea, controlled human cancer growth by blocking the abnormal functions of the transcription factor, STAT3 signaling. The natural product molecules showed inhibitory effects against growth of triple negative breast cancer which are non-responsive to current hormone therapies and have an up-regulated interleukin-6/STAT3 signaling axis. Treatment of human breast cancer and glioma cells growing in culture lead to inhibition of cell growth and survival.
